Great Sand Dunes National Park, Colorado
"The troops rise from the dirt, driven to battle by the ruling force of the land. They march wildly, rushing across the earth in a feverous search for an enemy to consume. Like a stampede of needles they attack their foe, a million microscopic honey bees swarming to protect their queen. They cut and sting in an effort to stun their victim long enough to bury it alive. With infinite numbers and unrelenting power, this is not the adversary to take a vendetta against. But when a ceasefire is drawn, the soldiers return to the earth to rest in the wind swept battlefield. Peace befalls the land again as tranquility reigns. Supremely serene, the clean hills are calm and humble once more. This truce is temporary but, for those that endured the onslaught, it is a reward worthy of their perseverance."
Purgatory on Earth, the Sands Study documents the elegant beauty of the hellish dune landscape. The lore of purgatory is one of intense suffering, a place designed to punish the souls vanquished to it in order to purify them for eternal peace. The Sands Study is my attempt to capture the peace within the brutal landscape of the sand dunes. You can read the entire series statement and browse the rest of the collection here.
